What are the key elements of the “Scientific Method”?

The key elements of the scientific method include observation, hypothesis, experiment, reflection or reasoning, testing, and adjustment of former hypotheses. This method also emphasizes an ethical approach to science and research, while simultaneously extending that ethical branch to research subjects.

What do you make of Feyerabend’s claim that the only rule in science is that the rules can be broken, or that there really is no methodology?

I agree with Feyerabend’s claim saying that rules can be broken. I believe that progress is not always linear, and sometimes requires challenging pre-existing norms and finding the courage to suggest or promote new innovative ways of looking at methods and seeking out research advancements. I like that Feyerabend emphasizes the importance of straying from tradition, because progress in any form requires a meaningful risk, at one point or another. That is the principle of improvement.

Is media research different than natural science? How?

I believe this question is part of a larger question, that being what is and isn’t considered science. But I believe that natural science persists within media research in terms of quantitative data and analysis, while also existing as its own concrete form of evidence and intelligence. Natural science can be used effectively in studying areas of media research, even though the two aren’t at all interchangeable.
